Here is Jock’s story…….
Born in Oberon, drawing and painting was always an escape from the foibles, demands and confusion of contemporary life. Art and music were an integral part of our family culture, as was a burning sense of justice.
At age 16 I read the family copy of “Lust for Life”, a romantic telling of the passionate life of Vincent Van Gogh and that was that!
Luck and chance led to a wonderful career and vocation as a broadsheet newspaper illustrator and cartoonist for Fairfax and News Limited for over 25 years. This dream job supported my painting and other creative endeavours and I’m now settled again in Bathurst.
The landforms, flora and the indigenous and colonial history of this place are the primary inspirations for much of the work I produce here. For the last decade or so I’ve worked mainly with watercolour, eucalyptus gum ink and raw earth pigments, and reed pens sourced from local creeks and rivers.
