Nicole Foxall CLOSER 5th October - 20th October 2018
I am an artist living in Bathurst NSW. I love to explore the ever changing landscape around me - often painting plein air studies that return to the studio to be made into larger work. I enjoy colour and use oil paints to enhance the vibrancy and textures of my painting.
The show title reflects the powerful attraction the landscape has upon me. I’m forever drawn closer, contemplating the shapes colours and patterns while striving to paint it’s elusive and “half seen” elements. In my paintings I attempt to capture my immediate sensory experience when in the landscape and use memory and imagination as organising principles in my work.
This exploratory impulse has resulted in my work to become increasingly abstracted. It is difficult to avoid the human imposed lens on nature but I feel this makes a pathway to greater connection to the land around us. Whilst painting over the last 12 months I have observed the landscape change as the drought has taken hold. There is brittleness there but also colour and resilience. I hope my work encourages the viewer to enhance their own empathy and bond with our natural environment.
